Selfies

Every girl I have ever been and want to be.

I have a box of sketchbooks dating back to my middle school years in my parents’ basement. While the content of my artwork has shifted far away from doodles of boy bands and homeroom crushes, a constant character within the pages has been frequently featured in a variety of media. My little self-portrait girl, with her long blonde hair and soft smile, finds herself on adventures or wearing outfits I can only dream of.

Each morning I draw a new selfie in my sketchbook to set the intention of my day, explore color and texture combinations, or imagine myself participating in an activity or hobby I’d like to try. Sometimes these doodles are translated into detailed, digital images using my iPad and Adobe Fresco in an effort to focus during lectures or meetings.

Drawing a character I have known for over a decade allows my brain to quietly untangle itself so I can be more present in the space I occupy. She’s familiar — one of my best friends and longest compainions.

I love my selfie girl. She is the past, present, and future.
